Usually the word "continent" means a huge area of land bigger than Greenland (the largest island in the world), but in the context of solidarity economy it refers to a transnational region such as Europe and Asia, as subdivisions of the whole world, at the level of which conferences, meeting, networks etc. are often done because of the geographical, cultural, socioeconomic and sometimes linguistical closeness. So countries without terrotories in continental parts of the planet are also regarded as members of a "continent," such as United Kingdom is part of Europe and Japan and the Philippines are parts of Asia.

It is important to remember that there is no clear division between continents, and Mexico, for instance, is categorised as part of both North America (as a member of North American Network for Solidarity Economy) and Latin America (as a member of RIPESS Latin America). It is also true that Oceanian countries such as Australia and New Zealand are incorporated into the larger continent as Asia-Pacific.
