The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is the first global agreement to coyer ail aspects of the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. Signed in 1992, the treaty is recognised as a land mark in international law and has been ratified by more th an 192 countries.
Two of the most important articles of the Convention from a socio-economic perspective are article 8j and article 15.
Article 8j defines the relevance of traditional knowledge for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Article 15 details the conditions of access to genetic resources and the principles of benefit sharing, should right to access be granted.
